Antique Victorian mourning brooch featuring a hand surrounded by a wreath of flowers. The hand holds the wreath with roses for love and forget-me-not representing remembrance.
Jet is fossilised wood from an area in England called Whitby. This material became popular after the death of Prince Albert in 1861 and was worn by Queen Victoria whilst in morning. Black coloured jewellery set in vulcanite, bog oak or pressed horn were also popular materials.
