Antique Victorian 1887 Ladies Pocket Silver Watch
Descripción
This finely crafted antique pocket watch is a strong example of late 19th-century British horology, combining decorative silver casework with a carefully detailed enamel dial. The white enamel face features black Roman numerals and elegant blued steel hands, framed by a scalloped chapter ring accented with hand-painted floral motifs in soft pastel tones. At the centre, additional floral detailing adds warmth and character, reflecting the decorative sensibility of the Victorian period.
The sterling silver case is richly engraved with layered foliate scrollwork and textured borders across both the front and reverse. The engraving is crisp and well executed, giving the watch a pleasing visual depth and a satisfying weight in the hand. Such ornamentation suggests this was intended as a personal and cherished object rather than a purely utilitarian timepiece.
The movement is currently running at the time of listing. However, as with all antique watches, it is sold as not working, as accuracy and longevity cannot be guaranteed without a full professional service. This makes it suitable for collection, display, or potential conversion into a pendant or chatelaine piece.
The hallmarks indicate British sterling silver, assayed in Birmingham. The Anchor is the Birmingham assay mark, the Lion Passant confirms sterling silver purity, and the date letter “n” corresponds to the late 19th century. Maker’s marks include G Robertson and Whitehorn, both associated with Birmingham silversmithing and watch case manufacture during this period. Additional reference and serial marks are present, consistent with Victorian production practices.
