Antique 1870s Victorian Jet Mourning Locket Necklace
Descripción
This striking Victorian mourning locket is carved from glossy Whitby Jet, a lightweight fossilised material prized for its intense black sheen. Oval in form, the piece is set with warm-toned brass fittings, a metal often used in mourning jewellery due to its gentle glow against the dark jet.
The locket opens to reveal two internal compartments: one side contains an original 19th-century photograph of a woman, while the other retains its original backing and frame. The interior is stamped T&J Bragg, a known Birmingham jewellery firm active during the Victorian era, noted for producing fine-quality jet and mourning jewellery. Although little published detail survives about the company, their mark appears on several pieces of period jewellery, often combining jet, vulcanite, or gutta-percha with gold or brass fittings.
Dating to c.1870s, this piece is a powerful example of high mourning jewellery—worn not only as personal adornment but as a deeply symbolic act of remembrance.
Please note: This locket does not include a chain.
