Crafted from vulcanite, a popular material during the Victorian period, this necklace showcases a stunning array of large, oval-shaped links. Vulcanite is a type of hardened rubber known for its durability, rich black color, and ability to be molded into intricate shapes, making it a highly sought-after material for antique jewellery collectors.
Vulcanite was invented in 1843 by Thomas Hancock. The material combines sap from the Ficus tree with sulphur. The material was moulded not carved. It was used in jewellery during the mourning period after Prince Alberts death in 1861 when Queen Victoria was in mourning. Black coloured jewellery were in made of jet, vulcanite, bog oak or pressed horn were popular materials.
