Charles Horner: The British Silversmith Who Blended Art and Craft

Few names in British jewellery evoke the charm of the early 20th century quite like Charles Horner. Known for his artistic silver jewellery, enamel work, and innovative craftsmanship, Horner created pieces that captured the essence of Art Nouveau design — elegant, affordable, and made to be worn every day.

Born in Halifax, Yorkshire, in 1837, Horner began as a watchmaker before establishing Charles Horner Ltd in the 1860s. His workshop soon became a leading light in English jewellery design, producing silver pendants, bangles, hatpins, and accessories that defined the Arts and Crafts movement in Britain.

Each piece carried Horner’s signature blend of artistry and practicality — fluid natural forms, intricate enamelling, and a quiet sophistication that made his work stand out. He was also an innovator, patenting the now-famous ‘Dorcas’ thimble, which combined a strong steel core with an outer layer of silver to ensure durability and longevity.

By the 1910s, Horner’s designs had become instantly recognisable, and his name synonymous with well-made, collectable silver pieces. Even after his death in 1896, Charles Horner Ltd continued to produce jewellery that reflected his founding ethos: craftsmanship for real life. His post-war silver bangles and brooches maintained the same quality and attention to detail that had made the brand a household name.

Today, Charles Horner jewellery is treasured by collectors for its craftsmanship and timeless style. From enamel pendants to silver bangles, each piece tells the story of a designer who bridged the worlds of art and accessibility.

At Mayveda Jewelry, we are delighted to offer a vintage sterling silver bangle by Charles Horner, hallmarked Chester, 1946 — a beautiful example of his enduring legacy and the timeless appeal of mid-century British silverwork.
