L'histoire des bijoux en corail en Europe remonte au moins à la Rome antique, où on croyait qu'ils protégeaient les enfants et conjuraient le mal. Pline l'Ancien aurait recommandé le corail pour se protéger contre l'attrait des tentatrices. Les peintures de la Renaissance de l'Enfant Jésus le représentent souvent tenant ou portant des amulettes de corail protectrices, et le corail méditerranéen de Trapani, en Sicile, était particulièrement précieux pendant l'Empire français.
