Le nom "anneaux borroméens" vient de leur utilisation dans les armoiries de la famille aristocratique Borromée du nord de l'Italie. Les anneaux ont été utilisés dans l'histoire pour symboliser la force dans l'unité, par exemple l'Église a utilisé le design pour symboliser la Trinité.
