This exquisite antique Victorian mourning brooch is finely crafted in 9ct gold, featuring intricate engraved detailing and rich black enamel surrounding a central panel of woven hair. The combination of materials reflects the deeply personal nature of mourning jewellery during the 19th century.
While mourning jewellery dates back as early as the 16th century, it reached peak popularity during the Victorian era following the death of Prince Albert in 1861. Hairwork became a significant element of these sentimental pieces. Interestingly, not all hair used was directly from the deceased; much was sourced from Europe to meet the high demand, allowing pieces like this to serve as symbols of love, remembrance, or connection.
