A timeless symbol of luck and protection, this antique Victorian brooch is beautifully crafted in sterling silver in the shape of a horseshoe. The design features a finely scalloped edge along the base, framed with a delicate rope border for added texture and charm. It fastens securely with an open ‘C’ clasp, typical of the period.
Horseshoes have long been regarded as symbols of good fortune. Traditionally made from iron—a material believed to ward off evil—they were often fastened with seven nails, seven being considered the luckiest number. In various cultures, hanging a horseshoe on a door serves as a protective talisman. Some say the ends should point upwards to “catch” luck, while others argue they should point downwards to “pour” luck onto those who pass by. During the Victorian era, horseshoes were commonly worn or displayed with the open end pointing downwards.
