About retro and mid-century jewelry
Retro jewelry dates from the late 1930s through the 1950s and beyond, an era of bold, confident design. After the cool geometry of Art Deco, jewelers turned to warm rose and yellow gold, sculptural curves, oversized bows and generous volumes of metal.
What to look for
Look for rose gold, chunky links, bows, scrolls and flowers, and diamonds set in raised, sculptural mounts. Post-war cluster rings, cocktail rings and charm bracelets were all hugely popular. Later vintage pieces from the 1960s to 1990s, including hallmarked British gold charms and engraved silver bangles, are full of character and often wonderfully priced.
