Antique 1897 Enamel Hair 9ct Gold Mourning Ring
Description
This exceptional late Victorian mourning ring, hallmarked for Chester, 1897, is a beautifully preserved example of sentimental jewellery from the era. Crafted in rich 9ct yellow gold, the ring features a navette-shaped face set with seed pearls in a cross formation, surrounded by deep black enamel. The shoulders are decorated with fine geometric engraving, leading to a section of intricately woven hair visible beneath a protective panel — a touching memento of remembrance.
Jewellery of this kind was worn to honour and remember loved ones, with materials carefully chosen for their symbolism. Black enamel represented mourning and eternity, while pearls symbolised purity and tears. The inclusion of woven hair made each piece deeply personal, a physical token of affection and memory.
Hallmarked with 9, 375, and the Chester assay mark, along with the date letter “O” for 1897, this ring is a true collector’s piece — a delicate blend of sentiment, history, and artistry.
