This early 20th-century sterling silver carpenter’s pencil holder is a practical object made for working tradesmen, designed to protect and carry a carpenter’s pencil securely on a chain. Cylindrical in form, the silver sleeve slides over the pencil, allowing it to be worn while working and preventing breakage. The original wooden carpenter’s pencil survives and is stamped “JOHAN FABER” and “MADE IN BAVARIA”, identifying it as a German-made pencil produced by the Faber family, renowned for supplying high-quality pencils to professional trades during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The pairing of a British-hallmarked silver holder with a Bavarian pencil reflects the international trade in specialist tools at the time.
