SOTHEBY'S CATALOGUE NOTE
Although the work of Louis Rault (1847-1903) is not widely known, he was regarded by Vever as "one of the most distinguished chasers of the period, and perhaps the greatest ever". The son of a shoemaker, Rault , who was largely self taught, began his apprenticeship at the age of 14, when his eagerness to learn was thwarted by mundane chores assigned to him by his employer. In 1868, he entered Boucheron's workshop as a chaser and stayed there for seven years, thus beginning a career that won him the admiration of his contemporaries and many awards, including the cross of the Légion d'Honneur. Several pieces by Rault are in the collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. See Henri Vever, French Jewelry of the Nineteenth Century, translated from the French by Katherine Purcell, pp. 948-964.
