This symbolic Victorian brooch takes the form of an anchor entwined with a cross — a meaningful representation of faith, hope, and charity, a trio of virtues popular in 19th-century sentimental jewellery.
Expertly crafted in agate, engraved silver, and a central gilt metal collar, the cross and shank are formed from softly polished chalcedony, with a twisted rope motif rendered in detailed silver. The anchor is beautifully engraved, enhancing its maritime symbolism and spiritual resonance.
Originally made as a brooch, the piece also features a discreet loop at the top, allowing it to be worn as a pendant — a rare and versatile design detail from the c.1870s.
This piece would have likely been given as a token of steadfast love or religious devotion, and remains as powerful today as it was when it was first worn.
