Antique Edwardian (1901-1910) Sterling Silver Kissing Swallow Paste Necklace
Description
Antique Edwardian pendant necklace c.1901-1910. This pendant features two Swallow birds kissing, holding up two bows with an oval frame of real white pearls and petals. The pendant is set in sterling silver with a hallmark '800', which means the piece was most likely handmade in Italy after 1872 but before 1937, we date the piece around the Edwardian era 1901-1910. The pendant is encrusted with paste glass stones mimicking diamonds, a popular alternative when diamonds were heavily regulated and carriage thefts were rife during this period. The Swallow birds has tiny red paste stones for eye meaning love. Swallows at this time represented your want for a loved one to return home safely, faithfully or soon.
The pendant is in excellent condition, measuring 5cm / 1.9" in length (including the pearl) and 2.8cm / 1.1" at it's widest point. The necklace hangs from a new adjustable 16-18" sterling silver chain.
