Antique Victorian 1878 Mourning Black Enamel 9ct Gold Ring
Description
Antique Victorian ring featuring white seed pearls and black enamel set in 9ct yellow gold. Around the band there is a woven piece of hair work. On the inside of the band there is an inscription "My Mother" alongside the hallmarks.
Mourning jewellery dates back to the 16th century, it became popular in the Victorian era when Prince Albert passed away when Queen Victoria went into mourning. The most interesting pieces of mourning jewellery include hair work, which was not necessarily from the deceased much of the hair was imported from Europe to keep up with demand. It was used to created a connection between a decreased loved one.
The hallmarks indicate the piece was marked in 1878 in Birmingham, England from 9ct gold.
