Antique Victorian 1897 Horseshoe Sterling Silver Locket Necklace

Antique Victorian silver horseshoe shaped locket featuring etched leaves and thistle. In the Victorian era a thistle symbolised endurance, unity and victory. Within the locket there are two small windows which allow you to place a picture, lock of hair or a thin momento would be able to fit into the locket. On the back of the piece it is hallmarked with a lion, X and anchor indicating the piece was hallmarked in 1897 Birmingham, England. The maker marks indicated the piece was made by a company or person called W.J.
HISTORY
The Locket has a long rich history, during the earlier centuries, they were used to carry good luck charms, mementoes, hair, powder and even poison. The locket secured its romantic status during the Victorian era, it became the most mysterious and alluring pieces of jewellery. Only the wearer knows what secrets lie within the locket. It was to be the ultimate love token. Pictures held in lockets were originally miniature portraits, these were gradually replaced with photographs.
MEASUREMENTS
The piece measures 1.8cm / 0.7” in height and 1.5cm / 0.6” in height. The piece hangs from a new sterling silver chain measuring 48cm / 18” - 51cm / 20”.
CONDITION
The locket is in excellent antique condition.
