Antique Victorian Faux Pearl & Cut Steel Pendant Necklace

Antique Victorian cut steel pendant featuring a large oval faux pearl set in a gold tone metal. This pendant is very unusual and rare, the faux pearl in the centre of the pendant is hollow and it moves around. The pearl is surrounded by a looped pattern, framed by cut steel beads. The pendant hangs from a new 9ct yellow gold chain.
Cut steel jewellery are made of steel studs that are faceted, they were popular from the 1760s until the late 19th century. Matthew Boulton (1728-1809) a steam engine manufacturer perfected a technique for faceting little steel studs, these studs were used as expensive gem-set alternatives. Under candlelight cut steel reflected the light as if they were diamonds.
MEASUREMENTS
The pendant measures 5.6cm / 2.2" in height, 2.7cm / 1" in width and 1.7cm / 0.6" in thickness. The chain measures 18" in length.

The pendant is in excellent condition.
