Antique Victorian Garnet Silver Gilt Necklace
Description
Antique Victorian necklace featuring faceted garnet gemstones set in silver gilt. Each garnet gemstone has been cut to reflect the light, the stones are deep red, changing in colour as light moves around them. Silver gilt is a term used for laying gold over silver.
Garnets were used extensively in all different designs of Victorian jewellery, bracelets, rings, brooches and elaborate necklaces, they represent the birthstone of January. Seed pearls in the Victorian era were associated with a number of symbols such as innocence, purity, humility and harmony.

The pendant measures 4.5cm / 1.7" in height and 2.1cm / 0.8" in width. The piece hangs from a new 9ct yellow gold chain measures 18".

CONDITION
This piece has at some point in its long history been converted from a brooch and then removed as indicated by the two squares on the back of the piece. The piece is in good antique condition, there is one stone missing on the left side of the piece.
