Antique Victorian Memento Mori Mourning Gold Ring
Description
Victorian mourning 9ct gold ring featuring delicate woven hair framed by a flower secured behind glass. The ring is decorated with floral swirls. The most unique and special part of this ring is the beautiful inscription on the inside, it says "In Memory of, Edwin Ade Jan 23rd / 58 ages 30".
HISTORY
Mourning jewellery dates back to the 16th century, it became popular in the Victorian era when Prince Albert passed away when Queen Victoria went into mourning. The most interesting pieces of mourning jewellery include hairwork, which was not necessarily from the deceased much of the hair was imported from Europe to keep up with demand. It was used to created a connection between a decreased loved one.
MEASUREMENTS
The ring is a UK size K and a US size 5.5. The flower in the centre of the ring measures 0.8cm / 0.3" in height.
CONDITION
The ring is in excellent antique condition.
