Antique Victorian Mother of Pearl Vinaigrette Locket Necklace
Description
Antique Victorian vinaigrette featuring carved mother of pearls set into a gold tone metal. This piece would have originally hung from a chatelaine, a popular decorative belt hook with chains, each chain would hold useful household items such as purse, watch, keys, vinaigrette and seals. Chatelaines were popular between 1860 to the end of the 19th century.
A vinaigrette is a small container with a perforated top, used to contain an aromatic substance such as vinegar or smelling salts, especially popular for women in the Victorian era to combat the aroma from the waste products common in cities. Unfortunately the perforated top which would have sat inside the piece is longer there, however the piece would be a fantastic locket and pendant as it is very beautiful.
