Our stunning black papier mâché trinket box features Abalone shell with silver accents. The box dates back to the Victorian era, it would have been a snuff box. Snuff was a mixture of ground tabacco and scented oil, a fashionable habit in the 18th century. This highly decorative box would be perfect for your precious jewels. Placed on your dressing table you could store your everyday pieces overnight for protection.
Papier Mâché became one of the most popular crafts in England during the late eighteenth century. A process of layering sheets of paper which was layered, lacquered and oiled before being baked. Often papier mâché pieces were highly decorative and made to look Japanese in design.
