This exquisite Victorian trinket box is crafted from lacquered black papier mâché, inlaid with iridescent abalone shell in a striking checkerboard pattern. Originally made as a snuff box—a fashionable accessory for storing ground tobacco mixed with scented oils in the 18th and 19th centuries—this highly decorative piece now makes a perfect jewellery or keepsake box.
Papier mâché craftsmanship flourished in England during the late 18th century. Thin layers of paper were built up, lacquered, and baked to create a durable yet lightweight surface, often styled to reflect Japanese decorative influences. The shimmering abalone inlay gives this piece a timeless elegance.
Today, this charming box would sit beautifully on a dressing table, ideal for holding small jewellery items or sentimental treasures overnight.
