Antique Victorian brooch featuring white seed pearl and tiny garnet gemstones set in 9ct yellow gold. In the centre of the locket is a glass panel with a beautiful piece of hair work secured inside. On the back of the locket has a stunning inscription reading, " Amelia Mitchell'. This piece is very special in design and history.
Mourning jewellery dates back to the 16th century, it became popular in the Victorian era when Prince Albert passed away when Queen Victoria went into mourning. The most interesting pieces of mourning jewellery include hair work, which was not necessarily from the deceased much of the hair was imported from Europe to keep up with demand. It was used to created a connection between a decreased loved one.
