Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Bird Mourning Locket Necklace

Antique Victorian locket featuring beautiful engravings of birds, reeds, and grass set in sterling silver. In the left hand side of the locket is a glass panel with a beautiful piece of hair work secured inside.
Mourning jewellery dates back to the 16th century, it became popular in the Victorian era when Prince Albert passed away when Queen Victoria went into mourning. The most interesting pieces of mourning jewellery include hair work, which was not necessarily from the deceased much of the hair was imported from Europe to keep up with demand. It was used to create a connection between a deceased loved one.

None, tested sterling silver.
MEASUREMENTS
The locket measures 4.7cm / 1.8" in height and 2.6cm / 1" width. The necklace hangs on a new sterling silver chain measuring 40.6cm - 45.7cm / 16"-18”.
CONDITION
The locket is in excellent condition, the only item to point out is the original glass covering the hair has a crack in it.
