Antique Victorian Vulcanite Cameo Mourning Brooch
Description
Antique Victorian Vulcanite mourning brooch featuring the image of a lady with flowers in her hair. The image is raised with intricate detailing.
Vulcanite was invested in 1843 by Thomas Hancock. The material combines sap from the Ficus tree with sulphur. The material was moulded not carved. It was used in jewellery during the mourning period after Prince Alberts death in 1861 when Queen Victoria was in mounring. Black coloured jewellery set in Made of jet, vulcanite, bog oak or pressed horn were popular materials.
