Victorian silver locket featuring fern and ivy leaf engravings. In the Victorian era both of these plants were very popular. The fern leaf symbolised fascination, magic, shelter and confidence, while the Ivy leaf symbolised love, affection, fidelity, friendship and affection. The Locket is perhaps the most mysterious and alluring pieces of jewellery. Only the wearer knows what secrets lie within the locket. It has to be the ultimate love token.
HISTORY:
During the Victorian era, young Victorian women would hide a picture of a man they admired, if the man offered up a locket of hair a marriage proposal usually would follow. Lockets were considered a statement of an intention to marry.

MEASUREMENTS:
The locket measures 2.1cm / 0.8" in height, 1.7cm / 0.6" in width and 0.7cm / 0.2" in thickness. The locket hangs from a new sterling silver chain measuring 45cm / 18" - 50.8cm / 20".
CONDITIONS:
The locket is in excellent antique condition, the locket closes securely and the piece is free of dents and scratches.
