Antique Victorian Octagon 9ct Yellow Gold Locket
Description
Victorian (1831- 1901) 9ct yellow gold octagon shaped locket, featuring delicate diagonal etchings on the front and the back of the pendant. The locket is hallmarked on the underside, saying 'FRONT 9CT BACK'. In the late Victorian and Edwardian period, lockets were manufactured with solid gold fronts and solid gold backs, the metal at the front is a sheet of solid gold and the metal at the back is also a sheet of solid gold.
The Locket is perhaps the most mysterious and alluring pieces of jewellery. Only the wearer knows what secrets lie within the locket. It has to be the ultimate love token. During the Victorian era, young Victorian women would hide a picture of a man they admired, if the man offered up a lock of hair a marriage proposal usually would follow. Lockets were considered a statement of an intention to marry.
