Vintage 1920s necklace featuring tiny pink beads strung into a long necklace with tassels. The necklace is worn by tying the two strands at the front. This piece was sourced from America.
Flapper girls were a significant part of the cultural shift during the Roaring Twenties in America, symbolising the emergence of a new womanhood that was far more visible, assertive, and independent than the traditional female roles. Known for their flamboyant fashion choices, flapper girls popularised the bob haircut, loose-fitting dresses, bold makeup, and accessories like feathered headbands, long pearl necklaces, and cloche hats.
Their lifestyle challenged societal norms, as they openly indulged in behaviours deemed controversial for the time, such as smoking, drinking, dancing to jazz music, and driving cars. Although often seen as rebellious or frivolous, flapper girls were crucial in advocating women's rights and freedoms, including their right to vote, and embodied a significant shift in societal attitudes towards gender roles.
Flapper girls of the 1920s were known for their love of extravagant, long, and often layered necklaces. The most iconic style was the long strand of pearls, sometimes reaching down to the waist or even further, that could be knotted or left loose. Other popular materials included glass beads or crystal, in bright colours or with art deco inspired geometric designs. These necklaces were often combined with other pieces of statement jewellery like large, geometrically shaped earrings, and bangles. The long, swinging necklaces added to the overall effect of freedom and movement that was a signature of the flapper style, both in their clothing and their attitude.
