Our marcasite vintage ring features a small amethyst gemstone in the centre of the ring, which is quite rare. The marcasites are claw set, the stones are cut to reflect the light giving a diamond effect.
The 'stone' known as Marcasite is actually pyrite. Pyrite is cut into small pointed or rounded facets to create marcasites. Their lustre is metallic and their brilliance comes from light reflecting off of the facets. Marcasites were a fashionable alternative for diamonds as early as the 1700s. Marcasites were fashion in the mid-1800s seeing a revival in the 1920s/30s.
